Granada Cathedral & Royal Chapel
Cathedral & Royal Chapel
The Catholic portion of Granada's lengthy history is best symbolized by its massive Renaissance-style cathedral and Royal Chapel.
The Gothic-style Capilla Real (Royal Chapel), which is adjacent to the cathedral, is where you can find the legacy famed monarchs - and patrons of Christopher Columbus' voyages to the Americas - Fernando and Isabel, which had the incredible Gothic edifice built as their personal mausoleum. You'll see their tombs, complete with elaborately decorated marble effigies, of the monarchs along with their daughter and son-in-law.
The construction of the larger cathedral actually began the year that the Royal Chapel was finished. With five ample, hefty pillars that raise the roof to over 30 meters (100 feet) high and artwork by such greats as Pedro de Mena and El Greco, this is certainly one site you don't want to miss.
***BONUS! Our Spanish school, located in the heart of downtown Granada, is just minutes from these two emblematic Granada sights. Plus, Enforex Granada school staff organize all sorts of cultural activities, one of which is a guided tour of the cathedral and Royal Chapel!
